Hip Abduction

Electrode Placement
Application Instruction by Dr. Lucinda Baker

Electrode placement for hip abduction stimulation. The iliac crest is marked with a line and the greater trochanter with the X. These relatively large electrodes are placed one between the greater trochanter and the iliac crest and the distal electrode below the greater trochanter along the line of the tensor fasciae latae.

Electrode placement for hip abduction stimulation. The iliac crest is marked with a line and the greater trochanter with the X. These relatively large electrodes are placed one between the greater trochanter and the iliac crest and the distal electrode below the greater trochanter along the line of the tensor fasciae latae.

The stimulated contraction is three minus out of five with a little bit of hip extension with hip abduction.

This quality of stimulated contraction is unusual and is due to the physique and size of this individual.

Hip Abduction

Muscle Anatomy

Muscles involved in Hip abduction:

Gluteus Medius
Origin: Gluteal surface of ilium, under gluteus, under gluteus maximus
Insertion: Greater trochanter
Other actions: Medial/internal rotation and flexion of the Hip (anterior fibers). Extension and lateral/external rotation of the Hip (posterior fibers)

Gluteus Minimus
Origin: Between the anterior gluteal line and inferior gluteal line of gluteal surface ilium, under gluteal medius
Insertion: Greater trochanter
Other actions: femur medial rotation

Tensor Fascia Latae
Origin: Anterior superior iliac spine
Insertion: Iliotibial tract (via greater trochanter)
Other actions: Hip flexion, Hip medial rotation, knee lateral rotation

Nerve innervation: superior gluteal nerve
Nerve root: L4, L5, S1

Gluteus Minimus
Nerve innervation: superior gluteal nerve
